Steele County Release Meaning
A person is released from Steele County custody when the detention center records that the person physically left its control. The reason matters. Bond or a court order may end jail custody while the criminal case stays open. A completed local sentence may be followed by probation. A transfer can move someone to another county, the Minnesota Department of Corrections, a federal agency, immigration custody, a hospital, or another organization without putting that person back in the community.
The Steele County Detention Center houses male and female people before and after sentence, as well as detainees held for other counties and state or federal organizations. Its current roster is only a present-custody aid. Removal from that PDF is a clue, not a release record. The maintained jail entry should identify the actual exit time and, when kept and public, the disposition or receiving authority. Steele County Release Record Fields

Use a full name, a known booking date or date range, and another identifier only when needed to separate similar names.

Not every item is necessarily public or retained. Medical details, security-sensitive corrections data, active investigative material, juvenile data, victim-identifying material, and sealed records can be restricted. If a field is withheld, ask the office to identify the legal basis. If a record no longer exists, ask which retention schedule governed its destruction. Steele County publishes no online post-release retention period.
Request Steele County Release Records
The Steele County Sheriff Records Department is the primary route for the local booking and physical-release record. It is at 2500 Alexander Street SW, Owatonna, MN 55060, and the main Sheriff number is 507-444-3800. Posted office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding holidays. The exterior lobby remains open around the clock with a telephone to personnel, but records processing follows office hours.
- Use the Sheriff data request form and give the person's full name, booking date or range, and date of birth only if needed to distinguish the record.
- Ask for existing booking and release data, including the actual release or transfer time, disposition, destination, and agency hold entry.
- Choose inspection, electronic copies, or paper copies. Ask for a cost estimate before work begins.
- If material is denied, ask for the statute that classifies it as not public. If no record is found, ask whether it was transferred, sealed, or destroyed under a schedule.
Effective June 29, 2026, the Sheriff's posted charge is $0.25 per side or page for fewer than 100 pages, including electronic delivery. Larger requests may use actual search, retrieval, and copy cost. Disks are $5, and the office states that cash or check prepayment applies. No booking-photo-specific fee or fixed turnaround is promised. Under Minn. Stat. § 13.03, inspection of public data is free and copies must be supplied as soon as reasonably possible.
Note: Ask for existing records within a defined range; the Sheriff need not create a new release list that it does not maintain.
Steele County Release Data Law
Minnesota's Government Data Practices Act begins with public access unless a state or federal law classifies the data otherwise. Section 13.82 identifies public parts of arrest and response data. Subdivision 26 defines a booking photograph as public data but permits temporary withholding when access would harm an active investigation. Section 13.85 protects sensitive corrections material, including certain medical, psychological, financial, investigative, safety, and security data.
Expungement under Minnesota Chapter 609A means sealing, not automatic destruction. A qualifying order can remove a case from public search even though custody and release occurred. Juvenile status, restricted data, older nonelectronic files, and authorized destruction can also cause a public no-result. When a public release date or status is wrong, § 13.04, subdivision 4 permits the data subject to challenge accuracy or completeness in writing. The responsible authority has 30 days to correct an accepted claim or explain the refusal and appeal route.
When Steele County Releases Process
Steele County publishes useful processing windows, though it does not publish a named release feed. The Detention Center release information says sentenced detainee releases typically occur from 0600 to 0800. Releases following arraignment on new charges typically process from 1430 to 1600. Emergency conditions can change either period.
These time bands help a family plan when to verify status. They do not promise that a specific person will leave during the stated period. A court order may authorize release while jail staff still complete checks, and another hold can stop community release. Call the detention center at 507-446-7000 for current public information. If timing must be documented, request the actual release or transfer entry rather than relying on the order time or the expected window.
Does the afternoon court order prove release? No. The order explains legal authority, while the Steele County jail entry shows whether processing ended and whether another agency took custody.
Travel After Steele County Release
Transportation needs can be hard to match with an early release window. Southern Minnesota Area Rural Transit, known as SMART, operates three fully accessible 18-passenger dial-a-ride buses throughout Steele County. The county does not say that SMART picks up at the detention center, coordinates with release processing, or keeps a dedicated stop there.
Contact SMART in advance to ask about scheduling, service rules, and the actual pickup point, then arrange another option if the timing cannot be matched. The research found no jail-specific family waiting area, property-return instructions, or guaranteed ride program. Those gaps should not be filled with rules from another Minnesota jail. The detention center's around-the-clock operation and exterior lobby also do not establish that a person may wait in a particular place.

Search Steele County Released Inmates
Start with the system that last held the person. The Steele roster can answer whether a detainee is currently listed, but it cannot show a release history. When a name disappears, follow the identity and custody trail rather than choosing one database as conclusive.
- Check the current Steele County roster and record when it was viewed. Treat absence only as a prompt to verify.
- Call the detention center and ask whether public information shows release to the community or transfer. Give the booked date when known.

A no-result can reflect an alias, spelling mismatch, data lag, county-only custody, a fully discharged DOC case, probation without DOC commitment, expungement, a confidential case, or another system. Match names with a booking number, six-digit MNDOC ID, court file, date, or other legitimate identifier. Do not merge two people based only on a similar name or image.

Steele County Court Release Clues
Steele County District Court is part of Minnesota's Third Judicial District. Minnesota Court Records Online, or MCRO, can preserve case numbers, charges, dispositions, sentencing events, hearings, filed orders, and public documents after a name leaves the live jail roster. Search the case number when possible, then review the Register of Actions and relevant filed order. Courthouse terminals can provide broader access than the remote site for some public material.
A key local search limit applies. MCRO does not allow a defendant-name search for a pending criminal case until conviction. Dismissed and continued-for-dismissal matters remain subject to that pending-case limit. A citation number, case number, or attorney information may therefore be essential. The court also warns that absence from an online calendar does not prove a hearing was cancelled. These court facts explain legal events but not the exact jail-door time.

Steele County Release Status Channels
Minnesota uses two distinct notification systems. Minnesota VINE covers county-jail custody status and notices, including the Steele County detention context. It can provide a custody-change lead and supports phone, web, text, email, and app channels. It is not a certified historic release record. A transfer may produce a status change even when the person remains confined elsewhere.
For a person in a Minnesota DOC facility or under DOC community supervision, use Minnesota Haven through the DOC Victim Assistance Program. County-jail VINE does not follow that person through the prison system. A DOC status of Under Supervision shows that ordinary prison confinement ended while state jurisdiction continues. Local probation may instead be identified through the court disposition and Steele County Community Corrections because there is no public statewide search for every probationer. Steele County Community Corrections is at 121 East Mill Street in Owatonna and can identify the proper public-data route for a case it controls. It cannot be treated as the source of the jail's exact physical release time. Private case notes, treatment details, address data, and safety information are not part of a routine public status request.
Federal Steele County Release Checks
A federal hold on the Steele roster may lead to transfer rather than community release. The Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator searches federal records from 1982 to the present by name or federal identifier. A result may display Released or Not in BOP Custody with a release date. That status proves only that BOP no longer holds the person. Another authority or federal supervised release can still apply.
ICE's Online Detainee Locator System covers current immigration detention, not historical release. A no-result can reflect transfer, spelling, timing, another authority, or the system's age limit. The U.S. Marshals Service has no comparable public historical release locator. PACER can explain a federal order; BOP can show later federal custody; ICE or USMS records requests cover their own events. Why is the person gone from the roster? The record may reflect release, transfer, a timing difference, or a mismatch. Call the jail and request the maintained event before stating the outcome.
Steele County Release Facility
The Steele County Detention Center is the only detention or correctional facility in the county that warrants its own facility page. It is a county jail operated by the Steele County Sheriff's Office at 2500 Alexander Street SW in Owatonna. The center holds pre-sentence and sentenced detainees as well as people held for other counties and state or federal organizations.
A community release can follow bond, a court action, or completion of a local sentence. Work release remains a custodial program. An agency hold can lead to Minnesota DOC, another county, federal, or other custody. Ask for the release type and destination because the words “released from Steele County” describe departure from one building, not always freedom from custody.
